Why do people need internet in rural communities when they make 2$ per day and have hardly enough food to maintain the family? We prove the value of internet in Macha.
This is probably a question that people raise or don’t dare to ask when we talk for the first time about rural development and our approach. Why do we think that the people in Macha are in any way different from us. They have the same needs and ambitions for their children. And communication services are key in a socially strong connected community like Macha.
Therefore answer these questions simply by proving the demand for internet and by showing that the community is able and willing to pay for the internet themselves. The demand for internet connectivity in Macha has exploded over the last years. We have reached the tipping point where the value of internet is clear to all and everybody wants to have it. For the second year in a row the community of Macha has been able to pay for the costs of the internet. There is no stronger sign for a sustainable model.
This month Macha has a been experimenting with a larger internet connection, connecting the village with a Committed Information Rates of 256 kb/s downlink and 128 kb uplink. The connection can burst traffic up to 2 Mb/s downlink and 512 kb/s uplink. With its successfully implemented authentication system a information exchange of over one Terrabit has been witnessed, coming from over 100 different user accounts at the same time. The statistics prove that the larger available internet bandwidth is directly absorbed by the different users. The demand for internet in Macha is therefore directly linked to the internet bandwidth Macha Works is able to provide now.
