The economy within the community of Macha is mainly informal with many small scale farmers. The farmers have survived for generations maintaining their own farm for their extended family. With maize, other crops, a few cows and a goat, they produce just enough to feed the family. They depend completely on the productivy of the harvest at the end of the rainy season. Investments in their farm are difficult because affordable financial services don’t exist for these farmers. Some of the farmers have approached Macha Works and want to work together to jointly invest in a dairy plant to collect the milk the cows produce. This requires the establishment of a cooperative organization that allows for joint investment in equipment. Macha Works would like to help these farmers with setting up this new organisation. The purchase of a refrigerated milk tank is the first cost for the new dairy cooperative.
