The economy within the community of Macha is mainly informal with many small farmers. The farmers have survived for generations maintaining their own farm for their extended family. With maize, other crops, a few cows and a goat, they produce just enough to feed the family. They depend completely on the productivy of the harvest at the end of the rainy season. Investments in their farm are difficult because affordable financial services don’t exist for these farmers. Some farmers partner to invest in the planting of Jatropha. The fruit of this tropical tree produces oil after three years that can be pressed to organic oil. This gives the farmers are able to generate its own energy supply. This requires the establishment of a cooperative organization. Works Macha likes to help these with this new initiative. The establishment of the cooperative is the first objective of these farmers.
