The community of Mapanza is situated in the Southern Province of Zambia, at 7 kilometers from Macha and 75 kilometers from the district capital Choma. The Zambian government has recently connected the community of Mapanza and Choma with a tarred road. This major investment will have a significant social and economical impact on the development of the community.
The Health Center in Mapanza has an important regional function and is closely connected with the Macha Mission hospital.
The area around Mapanza is mainly covered with woods at an altitude of 1.000 meters. Mapanza has a tropical climate and sufficient access to water that is just 10 meters below ground level. Small scale farming is the main way of making a living in and aroud the community. Approximately 128.000 people live in traditional rural housing within the radius of 35 kilometer, more than 20.000 extended families with on average 8 family members. The people are part of the Batonge tribe and 50% of the population is younger than 14 years.
